New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
